Otto Addo has expressed deep disappointment following Ghana’s emphatic 5-1 loss to Austria, admitting the scale of the defeat caught him off guard.

The Black Stars were overrun at the Ernst Happel Stadium in what was intended to be a key preparatory fixture ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Austria’s sharp execution and relentless tempo exposed Ghana’s defensive frailties, leaving the visitors with a result to quickly move past.

Despite the final scoreline, Addo pointed to encouraging moments in the opening half, where his side created clear opportunities but failed to capitalize.

“I can’t really remember us losing like this. It was really, really disappointing,” Addo admitted after the match.

He maintained that Ghana’s early performance offered signs of promise, particularly in attack, but poor finishing proved costly.

“At the end, I think we had a good first half, where we had some really, really good situations where we could have scored. Out of three or four situations, we at least should have scored one,” he added.

Addo’s starting lineup featured Lawrence Ati-Zigi in goal, with Thomas Partey and Kwasi Sibo anchoring the midfield. In attack, Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku were tasked with leading the line.

While the defeat raises concerns, the Ghana coach will be hoping his team can quickly regroup and respond positively in their next outing as preparations for the World Cup continue.
