Abdul Mumin Marks Comeback After Year-Long Injury Ordeal in Rayo Victory
Ghana international Abdul Mumin made a long-awaited return to competitive action on Thursday night, stepping back onto the pitch after more than a year out as Rayo Vallecano edged Espanyol 1-0 in La Liga.
The centre-back’s appearance as a second-half substitute signalled the end of a demanding 13-month recovery journey following a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered on March 4, 2025. The setback abruptly halted his previous season and triggered an extended rehabilitation period.
Mumin’s road back was far from straightforward. Complications, including a thigh issue and a minor relapse earlier this year, forced the club’s medical team to adopt a cautious approach before clearing him for full return in mid-February.
Despite being declared fit, the defender had to wait patiently for his opportunity, with head coach Iñigo Pérez easing him back into contention over several weeks from the bench.

His moment finally arrived in a tightly contested fixture at the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas. With the game locked in a stalemate deep into the second half, Sergio Camello struck in the 87th minute to hand the hosts a crucial lead.
Mumin was introduced shortly after to help see out the result, reinforcing the defence during the closing stages as Rayo secured all three points.
The comeback not only marks a personal milestone for the Ghanaian but also highlights the club’s continued belief in his quality. Reports indicate that Rayo Vallecano are already in discussions over a contract extension that could keep him at the club until 2029, underlining their confidence in his long-term role.
