Aaron Essel Grateful for Black Stars Call-Up, Vows to Make Impact in Unity Cup
North Texas SC midfielder Aaron Essel has expressed his excitement and determination after earning his maiden call-up to the senior national team ahead of Ghana’s participation in the 2025 Unity Cup tournament in London.
The 19-year-old, who has featured prominently for Ghana’s U20 side—the Black Satellites—joins Otto Addo’s 23-man squad as one of the fresh faces selected to impress in the absence of several senior players. Ghana will face long-time rivals Nigeria in the semifinal clash at the Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday, May 28.
Essel, who is on a season-long loan at North Texas SC from Scottish club St Johnstone, shared his gratitude and ambitions following the announcement of his inclusion.
“It’s a great feeling and a big motivation to represent your home country,” Essel told North Texas SC’s media team. “I am glad to be here, and I am excited for this opportunity. I will work hard to leave my mark, and I thank God for this opportunity.”
The promising midfielder was part of the Ghana U20 squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, and his continued rise has earned him recognition from the senior national team handlers.
