Ghana head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has voiced his disappointment following the Black Queens’ 1-1 draw with Mali in their second Group C match at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The result leaves Ghana winless in two games, having lost their opener to defending champions South Africa. Although the Black Queens took the lead in the first half, they were unable to hold on, conceding an equaliser early in the second half.

Speaking after the match, Bjorkegren expressed frustration that his team’s dominance in possession and attacking statistics was not reflected in the scoreline.

“We had 2.66 expected goals against Mali’s 0.62. We had very high possession. We had 8 big shots against 4 from Mali,” he said.

Despite controlling much of the play and creating more chances, Ghana once again dropped points in a crucial group game, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

Bjorkegren’s comments underscore the sense of urgency now surrounding the Black Queens camp. Ghana will face Tanzania in their final group game, needing nothing less than a win to stand any chance of progressing to the knockout stage.
