Villarreal Boss Backs Thomas Partey Ahead of Spurs Clash
Villarreal head coach Marcelino has expressed confidence in Thomas Partey’s readiness to face Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League, even as the Ghanaian midfielder prepares for a court appearance in London the following day.
Partey, who joined Villarreal on a free transfer in August after leaving Arsenal, has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to alleged incidents between April 2021 and June 2022. The 32-year-old, who denies the allegations, is due at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday for a plea hearing.
Despite the looming legal case, Marcelino insists the experienced midfielder remains focused and committed on the pitch.
“He is with the group. I’m totally convinced that he is mentally prepared, technically prepared, to play the game tomorrow night. For sure, he’ll be ready,” the Villarreal boss said at his pre-match press conference.
The Spanish manager went further to praise Partey’s contribution to the team both on and off the field.
“We are really happy that Thomas is with us for his football capacity and ability, and his presence as a human. He’s a great player with lots of experience… I think he will get back to his top level which we all know that he’s got and I’m very happy he’s with us in the team,” Marcelino added.
Partey, who has featured in all four of Villarreal’s La Liga fixtures this season, has been granted conditional bail requiring him to inform police of any international travel and barring him from contacting the complainants.
The Ghana international is expected to start against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night as Villarreal aim to make a strong statement in their opening European fixture, before returning to court duties the next morning.
