The JE Wilson Ghana Junior International 2025 Badminton Championships concluded in grand style on Sunday, with Ghana and Nigeria dominating the medal table in the U-19 finals at the Borteyman Sports Complex.

The final day saw five intense battles across the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles categories. Ghana, fresh from sweeping five of six gold medals at the U-15 level earlier in the tournament, delivered another strong performance despite narrowly missing a repeat clean sweep.

Ghana’s first gold came in the women’s doubles, where Moslena Ama Koramah Adu and Rachael Quarcoo outclassed Egypt’s Karma Elghandour and Salma Salah Edin with a dominant display of teamwork and precision.

The hosts clinched their second gold in the mixed doubles, as national champion Obapomba Adu Mintah paired with his twin sister Moslena Ama Koramah Adu to defeat compatriots Francis Obeng and Rachael Quarcoo in an all-Ghanaian showdown.

Nigeria reigned supreme in the men’s events. Saidu Aliyu secured gold in the singles final after overcoming fellow Nigerian Aderinola Samuel in a tightly contested match. The pair later combined forces to win the men’s doubles, underlining Nigeria’s growing stature in African badminton.

At the awards ceremony, Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Akpokavi lauded the progress of the sport in the country. “Watching these young athletes compete at such a high level is truly inspiring. It proves that with continued investment, we’re not far from Olympic success,” he said.

Ghana Badminton Federation President Evans Yeboah also praised the players for their exceptional performances, expressing optimism about the sport’s future in Ghana.

The 2025 Ghana Grand Slam continues with the senior-level competitions running until August 17, promising more thrilling badminton action in the days ahead.
