Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has expressed strong belief in Ghana’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the Black Stars have the potential to surprise more fancied opponents despite entering the tournament with limited expectations from many observers.

Ghana are preparing for their fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage after securing qualification for the expanded World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Black Stars face a challenging path in Group L, where they will come up against England, 2018 finalists Croatia and Panama. Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama before facing the two European nations in what promises to be a highly competitive group.

Addressing a congregation at the Philadelphia Church in Ghana, Adams drew inspiration from the biblical account of David and Goliath, using it as a metaphor for Ghana’s quest to overcome some of the tournament’s strongest teams.

“Per the rankings, no one believes Ghana will perform at the World Cup but since we are here, we have come for the symbolic stone David used to bring down Goliath for the Black Stars for the team to conquer all the big guns at the tournament,” he said.

The minister’s remarks reflect a growing sense of optimism among many Ghanaians, despite the Black Stars being viewed by some analysts as underdogs heading into the competition.

Ghana have already arrived in the United States, where preparations have entered their final phase ahead of the tournament’s opening matches. The team is expected to continue training and fine-tuning tactical plans before beginning its World Cup journey.

The Black Stars carry a proud history at the tournament, having featured in the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022 editions. Their most memorable campaign came in South Africa in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals and came within a penalty shootout of becoming the first African nation to qualify for a World Cup semi-final.

With the countdown to the tournament continuing, Adams believes Ghana has the spirit and determination to challenge the established powers and create another memorable chapter in the nation’s World Cup history.

The Black Stars will be hoping to translate that belief into results when they take to the field in North America in pursuit of a place in the knockout rounds.
