President John Dramani Mahama has reassured the Black Stars of the government’s full backing as they compete in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to the team on Wednesday, March 19, President Mahama emphasized that the support will not only be for the qualification campaign but will extend beyond, ensuring the national team’s long-term development.

“You are all talented players. We are going to continue to support you—not only for the World Cup qualifiers but beyond,” Mahama stated.

“I think that we must build a very strong team, and the way to do that is to find the resources to bring you together as much as possible and also to look for young talents to join you. That way, you can play with them and help nurture the next generation of Black Stars players. You can do it.”

Expressing his personal commitment, the President revealed his intention to watch the team in action, despite his nervousness when watching football.

“I will take time off and watch the game myself, even though my heart is not very good at handling soccer. They say I should eat before I go and watch,” he joked. “My hope is that you will justify my sitting and watching you. The whole of Ghana is behind you, and I’m sure you can make it.”

The Black Stars are set to face Chad in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Friday, March 21, at the Accra Sports Stadium. A win will be vital in keeping Ghana on track for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
