Otto Addo Lauds Semenyo’s Work Rate Despite Missed Chances in World Cup Qualifiers
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has defended Antoine Semenyo’s contribution to the team, stressing that the striker’s efforts against Chad and Mali went beyond just scoring goals.
The Bournemouth forward, who has been in fine form in the English Premier League, missed two clear chances during Ghana’s September World Cup qualifying fixtures. Despite those squandered opportunities, the Black Stars managed to collect four points, leaving their qualification hopes to be decided in October.
Addo, however, expressed delight with Semenyo’s overall display, particularly in the tense clash against Mali.
“It is difficult to compare games in the Premier League and games in Africa, and in Ghana. It is very very difficult and all games have their own nature. Surely, you can say he stands more out in the Premier League but for me today he was excellent,” the coach explained.
He further highlighted the striker’s relentless work ethic and commitment to the team’s cause.
“He fought until he could not run anymore. Maybe he thought he could stay a little longer but he was fighting. He was the lone fighter upfront and for me I am very glad with his performance,” Addo said.
“He put them under pressure, he made a lot of runs, he could run so others could shine. I am very very happy with his performance and his runs especially.”
Semenyo has found the net once in seven appearances for Ghana during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The Black Stars are set to continue their campaign with a visit to the Central African Republic before wrapping up their group stage at home against Comoros in Accra.
