Ghanaian midfielder Kwasi Sibo played his first-ever match in Spain’s top division as Real Oviedo kicked off their 2025/26 La Liga campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

The 27-year-old, who was instrumental in Oviedo’s promotion last season after more than a decade in the lower leagues, started the game and lasted the full 90 minutes. Sibo, with over 70 La Liga 2 appearances under his belt, showed his trademark work ethic in midfield despite the difficult result.

Real Oviedo’s night turned sour early on when Alberto Reina was shown a straight red card in the 26th minute, leaving the visitors with ten men. Villarreal wasted no time capitalising on the advantage, opening the scoring just three minutes later through Etta Eyong. Senegalese forward Pape Gueye added a second in the 36th minute to seal the win before halftime.

Sibo’s competitive La Liga bow was one of the few positives for Oviedo, as he held his own against Villarreal’s experienced midfield.

The match also saw another Ghanaian in action, with Thomas Partey coming on as a late substitute for Villarreal to make his debut for the Yellow Submarines.

Despite the setback, Oviedo will take encouragement from Sibo’s performance as they look to establish themselves in La Liga after their long-awaited return.
