Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has expressed his excitement following the club’s qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup next season, hailing the achievement as a major boost for both the team and his personal development.

The Porcupine Warriors secured their place in the continental competition after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Golden Kick in the final of the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup at the University of Ghana Stadium. Opoku emerged as the hero of the day, scoring both goals in the final to ensure Kotoko’s return to Africa.

Speaking to Kotoko media, the 26-year-old forward shared his joy at the opportunity to once again compete at the continental level.

“Playing in the CAF Confederation Cup boosts your morale, and it also helps you as a player to develop well,” Opoku said.

“I believe that with us playing in Africa next season, we as a team will do well, and me being a player, I will help my team achieve whatever goal we set.”

This marks a return to African club competition for both Kotoko and Opoku. The striker previously featured for the Reds in the CAF Confederation Cup during his first spell before departing for North Africa, where he played for USM Alger and Olympique Club de Khourigba.

Now back in Kumasi and leading the Kotoko attack once more, Opoku believes continental football will offer massive exposure and growth opportunities.

“That is the level I want to reach being a player because when you play in Africa, it helps you a lot and even your market value will increase,” he noted.

“When you are in town and you talk to people, they tell you, ‘I have stopped coming to the stadium,’ but since we have qualified for Africa, they say they will start coming. It is a level that when you play, it will help you, so one way or the other, it is really going to help we the players — and me, myself.”

Asante Kotoko are expected to begin preparations for their CAF Confederation Cup campaign in the coming weeks, with the new season also set to kick off in September. With Opoku leading the line, the club will be hoping for a strong showing both at home and on the continental stage.
