Kurt Okraku Sets Sights on WAFCON Glory as Black Queens Learn 2026 Fate
Ghana’s determination to finally conquer Africa at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been emphatically restated by Football Association president Kurt Okraku following Thursday’s final draw in Rabat.
The Black Queens were handed a demanding Group assignment alongside Cameroon, Cape Verde and Mali, a draw that immediately set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested tournament when it kicks off in March.
Despite the challenge ahead, Okraku struck a confident note, insisting Ghana are ready to take the final step after years of coming close. The CAF vice-president pointed to the team’s bronze medal finish at the last edition in 2025, also staged in Morocco, as evidence of steady progress.
“The ambition of the nation is to win the WAFCON trophy, and I believe we are not far away from achieving that,” Okraku said after the draw.
He added that Ghana’s mindset must now reflect that of champions, regardless of the calibre of opponents drawn. “On the back of Ghana finishing third at the last WAFCON, we should be ready to face any opponent. If you want to become champions, you must be prepared to play against any team on the African continent.”
Ghana have previously reached the WAFCON final three times—in 1998, 2002 and 2006—but are yet to lift the coveted trophy. With a renewed sense of belief, the Black Queens will base themselves in Fes during the group phase as they begin their latest quest for continental glory.
The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will run from March 17 to April 3, with Ghana hoping this edition finally delivers a historic breakthrough.
