Asante Kotoko’s management were prepared for Abdul Karim Zito’s resignation, according to the club’s Communication Director, Sarfo Duku, who revealed the decision did not catch the hierarchy off guard.

Zito stepped down from his role on Monday, a day after the Porcupine Warriors were eliminated from the MTN FA Cup following a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium. In the aftermath of his departure, Prince Yaw Owusu has been appointed to lead the team on an interim basis.

Speaking on Luv FM, Duku admitted the club anticipated the move, citing the coach’s frustration with recent performances.

“We were not surprised, because we knew that the coach wasn’t happy with the performance of his team, and so it didn’t come to us as a surprise at all,” he said.

He also dismissed suggestions that Kotoko were considering sacking the former Dreams FC boss before his resignation.

“No, we had no plan to do that. We were to receive the details of what transpired in the course of the march. And then, of course, we have asked the necessary questions,” Duku added.

Kotoko’s struggles have been evident in recent weeks, with the club recording just one win in their last five matches across all competitions, a run that has increased pressure on both players and the technical team.

With a new interim technical setup in place, attention now turns to the highly anticipated Super Clash against Hearts of Oak on Sunday in Matchday 22 of the Ghana Premier League, a fixture that could shape the club’s immediate trajectory.
