President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has described Nsoatreman FC’s decision to withdraw from the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League as “unfortunate” but says the GFA respects the club’s decision.

The Nsoatre-based club announced its withdrawal from the ongoing campaign, citing safety concerns for players and officials. The decision followed a troubling chain of events, including the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong Pooley, who was allegedly stabbed during a match between the two sides on February 2.

Nsoatreman also reported further hostility during a recent away fixture at Bibiani Duns Park, where unknown individuals reportedly attacked the team en route to Samartex, prompting a reassessment of their participation in the league.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, the GFA President expressed concern and empathy toward the club, especially its owner and Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, Ignatius Baffour Awuah.

“It’s unfortunate because Ignatius Baffour Awuah is my good friend. For somebody who has invested in football to go through that is unfortunate,” Okraku said.

While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Okraku emphasized that the decision lies solely with the club.

“At the end of the day, it’s their decision and not mine. It’s important that at a point in time, you respect people’s decisions,” he added.

The situation has reignited discussions around fan violence, matchday security, and the broader need for improved safety protocols in Ghanaian football.
