Former Ghana Premier League standout Ibrahim Salifu has officially joined the Benin national team, marking his first call-up since completing a nationality switch.

The ex-Hearts of Oak playmaker took part in training with the Squirrels ahead of their upcoming international friendly against Burkina Faso, where he is expected to make his debut.

The match serves as part of Benin’s preparations for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Salifu, who currently plays for FC Drita, represented Ghana at youth levels but opted to switch allegiance to Benin, the country of his late father.

“I am very happy with my choice to play for Benin, because my late father was also from Benin, so it is not difficult for me to change nationality,” he told 299 Foot.

“My dream was to one day play for the Benin national team, and that dream has come true, so I am very happy,” he added.

Head coach Gernot Rohr is reportedly impressed with Salifu’s creativity and work rate in midfield and is expected to include him in Benin’s final squad for the 2026 AFCON.

The Squirrels have been drawn in Group D, alongside DR Congo, Botswana, and Senegal, and will be counting on Salifu’s experience in top-flight football to strengthen their campaign.

Salifu’s move marks a new chapter in his international career, as he looks to make an impact for Benin and honour his late father’s legacy on the continental stage.
