Ghana began their 2025 Kirin Cup campaign on a disappointing note, falling 2-0 to Japan in a competitive opener on Thursday.

The hosts struck early, with AS Monaco attacker Takumi Minamino breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute after capitalising on a swift attacking move. Japan maintained control throughout the contest and doubled their lead on the hour mark when Ritsu Doan calmly slotted home, effectively securing all three points.

Despite the defeat, the fixture offered valuable international exposure for several newcomers. Goalkeeper Joseph Anang, along with Prince Owusu, Prince Adu Kwabena, and Derrick Kohn, all made their senior national team debuts.

The Black Stars will now refocus as they prepare to take on South Korea on 18th November in their second match of the competition.
