The Ghana women’s national team, the Black Queens, have dropped one place in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, moving from 65th to 66th globally. Despite the slip, the team maintains its 6th position on the African continent.

The minor drop follows a series of underwhelming performances in recent international friendlies against Ivory Coast. The Black Queens played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in the first leg before succumbing to a narrow 1-0 defeat in the second match. These games were part of the team’s preparations ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled for July.

Led by Swedish head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, who was appointed in February, the team has found it difficult to find consistency. Under his tenure, the Queens have managed just one win in five matches—a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Senegal.

Ghana has been drawn in a challenging Group C for the upcoming WAFCON, where they will face reigning champions South Africa, as well as Mali and Tanzania. With only weeks to go, the current form of the team has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike.

The Black Queens will need to rediscover their rhythm quickly if they are to make a strong impression at the continental tournament and regain upward momentum in the FIFA global rankings.
