Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has expressed satisfaction with his side’s performance following their 3-1 victory over Malawi in a pre-2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) friendly on Saturday, but noted that the margin could have been much wider.

The match, held at the Ziaida Complex in Morocco, marked Ghana’s first win in four games and kicked off their trio of preparatory friendlies ahead of the continental tournament.

Speaking after the encounter, Bjorkegren praised his team’s overall dominance but lamented missed opportunities in front of goal.

“The start was probably a little bit slow, but otherwise, we were the better team the whole game,” the Swedish tactician said. “We produced so many chances, we won the game 3-1, but if you are looking at the chances, we could have scored probably six, seven today. But the most important thing is to win.”

The Black Queens delivered a spirited display, creating numerous scoring opportunities while maintaining control for much of the match. The win provided a timely confidence boost as the team builds momentum ahead of their WAFCON campaign.

Ghana will next face Benin on Wednesday, June 26, before taking on arch-rivals Nigeria in their final preparatory match on Friday, June 29.

Coach Bjorkegren emphasized the importance of these games in shaping the team’s readiness for the tournament, saying earlier this week, “We want to test ourselves against different playing styles and team dynamics. Malawi and Botswana provide technical and disciplined opposition, while Nigeria offers the challenge of a traditional powerhouse.”

The Black Queens have been drawn into a tough Group C for the WAFCON, where they will face reigning champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali. The tournament kicks off on July 7, 2025, in Morocco.

Ghana will be hoping to ride the momentum from these friendlies into a successful continental campaign as they seek their first WAFCON title.
