Ghana’s sprint sensation and national 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati, has officially qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo after clocking a stunning 9.98 seconds (+1.2 m/s) at the McNabb Sprint Series.

The time marks a season-best performance for the 26-year-old, placing him in a tie for 17th on the official men’s 100m qualification list for the global showpiece

. It also represents the fourth time Azamati has dipped below the 10-second barrier in legally wind-assisted conditions—a remarkable feat that cements his status as Ghana’s fastest man over the distance.

Azamati, a pivotal figure in Ghana’s athletics resurgence, continues to shine on the international stage. His latest achievement follows a strategic decision to forgo participation in the national 4x100m relay team at the recent World Relays in Guangzhou in order to focus on qualifying for the individual 100m event—a move that has clearly paid dividends.

Azamati is also an integral part of Ghana’s 4×100m relay squad, having run the back straight in the team’s national record-setting performance of 38.07 seconds at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

His consistency and explosive speed have placed him among Ghana’s elite sprinters in history. Of the nine wind-legal sub-10 second performances ever recorded by Ghanaian athletes, Azamati is responsible for four. He joins legends Leo Myles-Mills and Aziz Zakari, who each have two sub-10 runs, and Joseph Paul Amoah, who has one.

Azamati also reached the semi-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, further solidifying his place among Africa’s premier sprinters.

With the Tokyo World Championships on the horizon, Ghanaian athletics fans will be looking to Azamati not only for representation but also for a possible podium finish as he continues his quest for global excellence.
