Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has lavished praise on goalkeeper Benjamin Asare following his impressive display against England, crediting the shot-stopper for playing a major role in the Black Stars’ recent successes.

Asare produced a series of crucial saves as Ghana battled to a hard-earned 0-0 draw against England in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper was at his brilliant best throughout the encounter, with his standout moment arriving late in the game when he denied England captain Harry Kane with a superb save. Shortly afterwards, Ghana survived another scare when Nico O’Reilly rattled the crossbar.

Reflecting on the performance, Gyan highlighted Asare’s composure and ability to position himself effectively, qualities he believes have made him one of Ghana’s most dependable players.

“Benjamin Asare is very composed. Wherever he is, you can see the ball comes there,” Gyan said.

The former Black Stars captain also recalled Asare’s contributions during Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign, insisting the goalkeeper has repeatedly come to the team’s rescue.

“He kept Ghana alive so many times in the qualifiers,” Gyan added.

Asare’s rise has been one of the positive stories of Ghana’s tournament. The goalkeeper was thrust into action after first-choice shot-stopper Lawrence Ati-Zigi suffered an injury during the Black Stars’ opening victory over Panama.

Since then, he has seized the opportunity with confidence, producing assured performances that have strengthened Ghana’s defensive stability.

The Black Stars remain one of the few teams yet to concede a goal at the tournament, following their 1-0 win over Panama with a disciplined clean-sheet display against England.

Gyan’s praise carries considerable significance given his status as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and one of the country’s most celebrated football figures. His endorsement reflects the growing belief that Asare has become a key figure in Carlos Queiroz’s squad.

With qualification to the knockout stage within touching distance, Ghana will once again look to their in-form goalkeeper when they take on Croatia in a decisive final Group L encounter. A strong result could secure the Black Stars’ place in the next round and further enhance Asare’s growing reputation on the world stage.
