Bashir Hayford Bemoans Decline in Player Aura and Star Power in Ghana Premier League
Veteran Ghanaian coach Bashir Hayford has expressed concern over what he describes as the erosion of mystique surrounding players in the modern Ghana Premier League, attributing it to their frequent public exposure.
Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM, Hayford shared his reflections on how the aura and reverence once associated with footballers have diminished due to their visibility in everyday spaces.
“In the past, fans could only see players on match days at the stadium. Today, players are everywhere; ghettos, drinking spots, streets — and it’s made them too common in the eyes of supporters,” Hayford remarked.
He argued that this constant public visibility has diluted the admiration supporters used to reserve for players, weakening the elite status they held within their communities.
According to Hayford, part of what made players icons in earlier generations was their exclusivity, which created a sense of mystery and deepened fan connection on match days.
Hayford’s comments come as his club, Heart of Lions, continues its strong push for the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League title. The Kpando-based outfit currently sits third on the table with 53 points, just one behind leaders Nations FC.
