Barcelona has officially decided not to exercise the purchase option on Ghanaian midfielder Abdul Aziz Issah, bringing an abrupt end to what many hoped would be the start of a promising European adventure for the youngster, Spanish outlet SPORT has reported.

Issah joined the Catalan giants on loan from Ghana Premier League side Dreams FC in September 2024, a move that was widely celebrated in Ghanaian football circles as a landmark step in the 18-year-old’s budding career.

His early involvement in first-team training under new manager Hansi-Dieter Flick sparked optimism that the club had unearthed a future star.

However, the reality of Issah’s time at Barcelona has failed to match the initial excitement. The dynamic midfielder made only two appearances for Barcelona Atletic, totaling just 26 minutes on the pitch — a far cry from the opportunities many expected him to receive, especially considering the injury-plagued nature of the senior squad during that period.

Despite a growing need for midfield depth and speculation that Issah might receive more minutes, he was left out of matchday squads for several months, raising questions about his development, adaptation, and role within the team.

This lack of integration contrasted sharply with his performances on the international stage. At the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Issah impressed with commanding displays for Ghana, reigniting discussion about his talent and potential future in European football.

Yet, his standout showings for the Black Satellites were not enough to sway Barcelona’s technical team to secure him permanently. By allowing the buyout clause to expire, the club has passed on the chance to invest in a player many still regard as having significant upside.

Issah will now return to Dreams FC, where he is expected to resume his development, with interest from other European and African clubs likely to follow.

While the move to Barcelona may not have panned out as hoped, Abdul Aziz Issah remains one of Ghana’s most exciting young midfielders, and his journey in football is far from over.
