Accra Lions head coach Rainer Kraft has underlined the significance of their upcoming clash against city rivals Hearts of Oak as the relegation-threatened side continues its fight for Ghana Premier League survival.

The crucial Matchday 32 fixture will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, May 23, 2025, with both clubs arriving on the back of confidence-boosting victories.

Accra Lions stunned Aduana Stars 5-3 in their previous outing, while the Phobians edged Berekum Chelsea away from home.

With just three matches remaining in the 2024/25 campaign, Lions are perched dangerously close to the drop zone. Coach Kraft admits the stakes couldn’t be higher.

“Just three games, if we win that game, we keep our chances to stay in the league, so for us it is a very, very important game,” the German tactician said in his pre-match interview.

Despite entering the tie as the nominal away side, Kraft believes his team’s familiarity with the Accra Sports Stadium — where they have won their last five matches — gives them a psychological edge.

“We are confident at the Accra Sports Stadium. There is something happening to us even if it is an away game. The mindset is good, training was very good so we are looking forward,” he stated.

Kraft also acknowledged the stature and pressure surrounding their opponents, emphasizing the importance of fan engagement for both clubs.

“I also think for a big club like Hearts of Oak with a big fan base, it is important to show the fans what they are able to do and at least it is an Accra derby, so I hope a lot of fans will come to give up the support,” he added.

Accra Lions sit 16th on the table and are two points adrift of safety. A win could prove pivotal in their quest to avoid relegation and extend their stay in the Ghanaian top flight. Kick-off is set for 15:00 GMT.
