Yussif Basigi has been officially confirmed as the head coach of Police Ladies for the upcoming 2025 WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers set to take place in Côte d’Ivoire later this month.

The appointment of Basigi, a former coach of Hasaacas Ladies, comes as a result of the current Police Ladies head coach, Abu Kassim Tabasu, not meeting the licensing requirements to lead a team in CAF-sanctioned competitions.

Abu Kassim led Police Ladies to their historic maiden Ghana Women’s Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, defeating Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the final. Despite that success, he will step aside and serve as assistant coach for the continental qualifiers.

“I am not going to lead the team [at the qualifiers] tactically or technically because I’m not qualified to be the head coach in Africa,” Abu Kassim told the media during Police Ladies’ Media Day held at the team’s training grounds at Awutu Winton Senior High School Park.

“I’m a License B holder, that is why Yussif Basigi is here. He is going to sit in as the head when we go there.”

Basigi brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously led Hasaacas Ladies to the final of the maiden CAF Women’s Champions League in 2021, where they finished runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Police Ladies are set to compete against some of the top women’s clubs in West Africa, including Bayelsa Queens (Nigeria), ASEC Mimosas (Côte d’Ivoire), AS GNN (Niger), USFA (Burkina Faso), ASKO (Togo), and Sam Nelly (Benin).

With Basigi’s expertise and the momentum from a successful domestic campaign, Police Ladies will be aiming to replicate Hasaacas Ladies’ 2021 feat and secure a spot in the main CAF Women’s Champions League tournament.
