Vincent Assafuah Challenges Mahama’s Financial Commitment to Black Queens
Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Sports Committee, Ekow Vincent Assafuah has cast doubt over the financial contribution made by President John Dramani Mahama to the Black Queens following their bronze medal achievement at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
His remarks come days after the Black Queens were celebrated for their third-place finish in Morocco. Former John Mahama and Vice President Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang hosted the team at the Jubilee House and pledged continued support for women’s football in Ghana.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s SportsNite program on July 30, 2025, Bidema questioned the transparency and actual value of Mahama’s gesture, claiming the amount given to the team was significantly lower than widely believed.
“I challenge President Mahama that the money he gave to the Black Queens is less than 40,000 dollars,” Bidema stated.
His comments are likely to stoke political debate over the politicization of sports achievements and the financial support extended to national teams.
The GFA, Ministry of Sports, and Parliament have all recently applauded the Queens’ efforts and called for increased investment in the women’s game.
