Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has emphasized the need for a major reset in the country’s sports sector following a series of disappointing performances on the international stage.

Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, coupled with underwhelming displays in Olympic qualifiers, has raised serious concerns about the state of sports development in the country.

At the 2025 JoySports National Sports Dialogue, Adams expressed his concerns, pointing out that Ghana’s inability to progress beyond the group stage in consecutive AFCON tournaments and its failure to qualify a single boxer for the 2024 Paris Olympics are clear indicators of deeper structural issues.

“Our recent sporting performances highlight the urgency of this reset,” Adams stated. “Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and our inability to send a single boxer to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games should not just be seen as disappointments but as a signal that our development system needs urgent attention.”

With Ghana now focusing on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the sports ministry is expected to implement new policies to address long-standing challenges and restore the nation’s reputation in global sports.
