The second edition of the Democracy Cup will not take place at the Accra Sports Stadium as initially scheduled, following a change of plans announced by Ghana’s House of Parliament on Thursday, August 21.

The highly anticipated fixture, headlined by a clash between city rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, was originally slated for August 29 at the Accra Sports Stadium. However, the game has now been rescheduled to September 5 and will be staged at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The Democracy Cup, an initiative spearheaded by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, was established to promote the values of democracy in Ghana. The inaugural edition, held last year, saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko edge Hearts of Oak to lift the maiden title.

Explaining the change, the Speaker emphasized the need to prioritize infrastructure, safety, and the overall experience for stakeholders.
“The decision to reschedule was made after careful consideration to ensure optimal facilities, security and a premier experience for spectators, players and supporters nationwide,” Bagbin stated.

A section of the official statement further highlighted the choice of venue:
“The University of Ghana Sports Stadium offers premier amenities and a capacious environment to host this high-profile contest in the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, and peaceful civic engagement.”

The shift in venue and date sets the stage for another exciting showdown between the two Accra giants, while reaffirming the broader mission of the competition: blending football with the promotion of democratic ideals.
