Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a significant setback following confirmation that Mohammed Salisu will miss the rest of the season through injury.

AS Monaco revealed that the centre-back sustained a serious knee injury during the closing stages of their 3-1 loss to Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1. Subsequent medical tests confirmed that Salisu tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, effectively ending his campaign.

In a statement, the French club indicated that the defender will receive full backing throughout his rehabilitation period as he begins a lengthy recovery process. The injury comes at a particularly unfortunate time for Monaco, who were already stretched defensively.

Salisu had grown into a key figure in the side, stepping up as a regular starter amid the absence of Christian Mawissa and Eric Dier. His setback further compounded an already difficult night for the Principality outfit, who also lost ground in the race for European qualification.

The situation mirrors recent misfortune at the club, with Salisu becoming the second Monaco player to suffer an ACL injury in consecutive matches. Japan international Takumi Minamino sustained a similar problem against AJ Auxerre just before the winter break.

From a Ghanaian perspective, the news raises concern ahead of the World Cup. Salisu now faces months on the sidelines, putting his availability for the tournament in doubt as the Black Stars prepare for a demanding group featuring England, Croatia and Panama.
