Portia Boakye Nominated for 2025 CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award
Ghana’s Black Queens captain, Portia Boakye, has earned a nomination for the 2025 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award following her standout performances for both club and country.
The experienced defender’s inclusion among the top ten finalists comes on the back of her stellar leadership at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where she guided Ghana to a bronze medal — the team’s first podium finish in seven years.
Boakye, aged 36, was instrumental throughout the tournament, combining composure at the back with inspiration as captain. Her exceptional form earned her a place in the WAFCON Team of the Tournament, further underlining her enduring influence on African women’s football.
She will, however, face tough competition from some of the continent’s finest talents, including Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga of Malawi, Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy of Morocco, as well as Esther Okoronkwo and Rasheedat Ajibade from Nigeria. Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji of Zambia, along with Mama Diop of Senegal, complete the strong list of contenders.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to announce the final shortlist and ceremony date for this year’s awards, which celebrate excellence across African football.
Meanwhile, Boakye is expected to rejoin the Black Queens camp next week as preparations intensify for their crucial 2026 WAFCON qualifying clash against Egypt, where she will once again lead Ghana’s charge for continental success.
