Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has officially named Benjamin Asare as Ghana’s number-one goalkeeper after his impressive performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 32-year-old Hearts of Oak shot-stopper earned his maiden call-up in March and wasted no time proving his worth, securing back-to-back clean sheets in Ghana’s 5-0 win over Chad and 3-0 victory against Madagascar.

Following Monday’s convincing triumph over Madagascar, Otto Addo reaffirmed that Asare is now the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.

“I think the next game is in June, and he is already the number one. We made that decision for him. He trained very well. We have a good atmosphere where the keepers are pushing each other,” Addo told 3Sports.

While Asare’s promotion is a major talking point, Addo also applauded the positive competition among the goalkeepers in camp, particularly Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joseph Wollacott, for their support and encouragement.

“[I’m] very grateful to the way Ati Zigi and Wollacott also behaved this week and the way they tried to probe Benjamin, help him, and guide him. I don’t take it for granted. Big credit to them. [Asare] was worth it. I’m glad for him.”

With Ghana leading Group I with 15 points, the Black Stars are well on course for World Cup qualification. The next round of qualifiers in June will provide another opportunity for Asare to solidify his status as Ghana’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.
