Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo has expressed deep concern over the waning quality and appeal of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), calling for immediate and meaningful reforms to rejuvenate the domestic competition.

Speaking at the “Honoring the Legends” event, the former Hearts of Oak star and national team icon did not mince words about the state of Ghanaian club football.

Polo, renowned for his artistry on the pitch in his heyday, said he had hoped to witness progress in the GPL over the years. Instead, he bemoaned what he sees as a steady decline in standards.

“We have played football here and witnessed many generations, but with this current generation, we expected even better football because records are meant to be broken,” he said.
“Unfortunately, it’s not happening. The league is simply not attractive.”

While Polo was candid in his assessment of the league’s problems, he also acknowledged the efforts being made by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) under its current leadership. He praised the administration for prioritizing coaching education, describing it as a positive step that could yield long-term benefits.

“The management of the league is doing their best. This is the only administration I know in the history of Ghana football that actively encourages and supports the training of coaches,” Polo noted.

Polo’s call for reform adds weight to ongoing debates about the future direction of the GPL.
