Marie Agba Hughes Slams Ghana Weightlifting Federation Over Lack of Support
Ghanaian weightlifter Marie Agba Hughes has voiced her disappointment with the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), claiming she competes under the national flag without receiving any financial assistance from the governing body.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite with Prof. E.K. Wallace on February 13, 2025, Hughes revealed that she personally funds her participation in international competitions due to the federation’s lack of support.
“I always compete in the name of Ghana, but I use my own pocket money to fund everything,” she lamented. “I have asked the Ghana Weightlifting Federation for assistance, but they told me there is no money.”
Hughes further disclosed that despite her dedication, she was left out of Ghana’s squad for the upcoming All Africa Games due to what she described as internal politics.
“I was supposed to be at the All Africa Games, but because of politics, I wasn’t invited,” she added.
The weightlifter, who began her career in the United States, initially saw the sport as a hobby but became more committed after finishing third in a competition. Since then, she has proudly represented Ghana on international stages.
Her revelations shed light on the financial burdens many Ghanaian athletes face, sparking concerns about the lack of institutional support for those striving to bring national glory.
