Laryea Kingston Warns Black Stars Not to Underestimate Panama at 2026 World Cup
Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has cautioned the Ghana national football team against taking any opponent lightly at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting Panama as a side that could cause serious problems in the group stage.
Ghana have been placed in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team, and Croatia national football team for the tournament scheduled to take place across United States, Canada and Mexico next summer.
While much of the attention has focused on the European heavyweights in the group, Kingston believes Panama could prove to be Ghana’s most challenging opponent because of how little is known about them compared to the other teams.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Kingston stressed that familiarity with traditional football powers like England and Croatia should not distract the team from preparing thoroughly for Panama.
“We know our opponents very well, apart from Panama. I think we are very much aware of England. A lot of people are writing off Panama, but for me, that’s the most important opponent,” he said.
“We see England and Croatia over and over again, playing every week. But the Panama team are players that we are unaware of. They will be a thorn in our flesh. I know most people see them as the underdogs, but I think they will be the most difficult match,” Kingston added.
The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23. Their final group match will come against Croatia on June 27.
