Kotoko Cut Ties with Nigerian Fernando Bassey After Underwhelming Season

Asante Kotoko SC have officially parted ways with Nigerian attacker Fernando Wisdom Bassey following a largely disappointing 2024/25 campaign in the Ghana Premier League.

The Kumasi-based club signed the 22-year-old forward on a free transfer from Sporting Lagos in August 2024, handing him a three-year contract that was expected to run until 2027.

However, the Nigerian struggled to find his rhythm in Kotoko colours. Despite featuring in 16 league matches, Bassey managed to score just one goal, falling short of the expectations set upon his arrival.

Initially signed as a versatile option capable of playing across midfield and attack, Bassey never quite settled into Kotoko’s tactical system. His lack of impact in key matches further intensified scrutiny from fans and pundits alike, particularly during the club’s inconsistent league run.

Bassey’s departure adds to a growing list of exits from the Porcupine Warriors, who are undergoing a significant squad overhaul ahead of their 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
