Asante Kotoko captain Fredrick Asare has described his side’s MTN FA Cup victory as a “special day” after lifting his first piece of silverware since assuming leadership of the club.

The Porcupine Warriors defeated Division One outfit Golden Kick FC 2-1 in an intense final at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Sunday, thanks to a brace from Kwame Opoku. The win brought an end to Kotoko’s six-year trophy drought and earned them a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

Speaking in a post-match interview with Joy Sports, the goalkeeper could not hide his joy after finally lifting a trophy in Kotoko colours.

“This is my first time lifting a trophy for Kotoko. It’s been six years since we won it and I think it’s a special day,” Asare said.

Although Asare did not feature in the match, having been named on the bench, he led the team in the celebrations and received the trophy on behalf of the club, an emotional moment that capped off a rollercoaster season.

The 25-year-old has emerged as a key figure in Kotoko’s dressing room over the past two seasons, becoming a vocal leader and steady presence in goal.

He dedicated the FA Cup success to the club’s dedicated fan base, acknowledging their unwavering support throughout the campaign.

“For the fans, it is special and we hope to do more in the years ahead,” he added.

The final may also have marked Asare’s last appearance with Kotoko, at least in official capacity, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current season. Talks over an extension remain uncertain.
