Sports Minister Kofi Adams has taken a major step toward reshaping Ghana’s sports financing structure after formally presenting the Sports Fund Bill to Parliament .

The Minister, who has consistently pushed for a comprehensive financial framework since taking office, described the Bill as a critical tool for the country’s sporting progress. As he laid it before lawmakers, he emphasized that the new Fund is designed to “hasten the nation’s sports development.”

In his address to Parliament, Adams acknowledged long-standing concerns about insufficient funding, noting that sports outside football have suffered the most from the current system.

“It’s quite clear that over the years, this House has had challenges to deal with many issues that affect funding in our sports generally. Funding is mostly secured to support just football, when indeed, when we talk about sports, it goes beyond football,” he stated.

He reminded MPs that various attempts to build a reliable financing structure had fallen short, making it difficult for the Ministry to effectively support multiple disciplines.

“There have been many attempts to put together a funding system that will enable the Ministry [Sports and Recreation] execute its programme by bringing on board many more sporting disciplines and supporting them,” he said.

Adams expressed strong confidence that the proposed Fund will finally close the gaps that have hindered sports growth for decades.

“When approved, we will not have the challenges of funding our sports, and sports will grow to bring about development and support other progressive activities that we do in this country,” he added.

For years, Ghanaian athletes , particularly those in lesser-known sports have struggled due to limited resources, inconsistent sponsorships, and inadequate preparation for international competitions.

The Minister believes that with the passage of the Sports Fund Bill, Ghana will be better positioned to provide fair, sustainable, and structured support for all athletes, ultimately strengthening the nation’s competitiveness on the global stage.
