Kingsley Owusu Achau recounts ignored proposal for local-players focused Black Stars team
Bank roller for Bechem United, Kingsley Owusu Achau has revealed that his proposal for developing a strong, local-based Black Stars squad was dismissed by football authorities and the Sports Minister two years ago.
His comments comes at the back of eight players who withdrew from the recent AFCON qualifiers due to injuries and personal reasons.
Speaking on Sportsnite on Asempa FM, Kingsley Owusu Achau said the plan was aimed at fostering homegrown talent, suggested assembling a team of 25 local players for a dedicated training camp led by the Black Stars’ head coach.
According to him, this setup would allow a balance of international and local players in the national team
“Two years ago I suggested a good idea to the leaders of our football and the Sports Minister. I suggested to them that a Black Stars team made of only local players (about 25 players) should be set aside for camping where the head coach of the Black Stars will take through a special training and mentorship session.”
“When it is time for calling players for the national team, the coach will only call about 10 of the players who don’t play in Ghana and the rest will be the local players. But the didn’t take my suggestion.”
Ghana will take on Angola on Friday, November 15, followed by a home game against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.
