Assistant coach of Asante Kotoko, Hamza Obeng, has issued an apology to supporters following the club’s defeat to Karela United in the Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors travelled to the Aliu Mahama Stadium for their Matchday 25 encounter but returned empty-handed after a narrow loss. Karela United secured victory courtesy of a first-half strike from Malik Abubakar.

Kotoko’s challenge became even tougher late in the first half when defender Henry Ansu was shown a red card in the 40th minute, forcing the Kumasi-based side to complete the remainder of the match with ten players.

Reacting after the final whistle, Obeng admitted the result was disappointing and acknowledged the frustration of the club’s supporters. However, he urged the team to quickly move past the setback and focus on upcoming matches.

“We are down with the result that we had today, but it’s part of the game. We need to take it aside and concentrate on our next game,” he said.

The assistant coach also pointed to missed opportunities and the red card as key factors that made the contest more difficult for his side.

“Unfortunately for us, we were not able to put the ball in the back of the net, and we conceded that easy goal at the time we were down by one man. We are sorry for losing this game, but the league title race is not over yet,” Obeng added.

The defeat extends Kotoko’s recent inconsistent run in the league. The club has now lost three of its last five matches, with their only victory in that period coming in a 2–0 win against Young Apostles FC.

Despite the setback, Kotoko remain within reach of the top positions, currently sitting fifth on the table with 39 points. They will look to bounce back when they face Nations FC in their next league fixture.
