Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, the President of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA), has called for a closer partnership between GUSA and the newly created Ministry of Sports and Recreation to enhance the development of sports in the country.

The call for collaboration comes at a time when GUSA are seeking innovative ways to enhance athlete development and performance amidst limited funding and resources.

Highlighting the significant role universities play in nurturing athletic talent, Tanko emphasized that GUSA is a key contributor to Ghana’s success in sports, providing the majority of athletes who represent the nation at international competitions.

“We need serious collaboration with the Ministry. GUSA contributes a lot in terms of providing athletes for the nation,” Tanko stated on Asempa FM.

He further revealed that about 90 percent of the athletes who represented Ghana at the African Games last year are products of the universities. This underscores the critical role GUSA plays in identifying, developing, and preparing talent for national and international events.

Tanko believes that a stronger partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports would ensure better funding, resources, and infrastructure for university sports.
