GPL Launch: President Mahama, Stonebwoy Set to Headline Ghana Premier League Season Opener

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season officially gets underway on Friday, September 12, with a grand opening ceremony at the Accra Sports Stadium.

President John Dramani Mahama has been confirmed as the Special Guest of Honour and will perform the ceremonial kick-off before the first match of the campaign.

The season opener will see Accra Hearts of Oak lock horns with newly promoted Hohoe United in a highly anticipated fixture scheduled for 7:00 p.m., following the launch ceremony at 5:00 p.m.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), in a statement on X, announced details of the event, highlighting the presence of President Mahama and a headline performance by award-winning reggae-dancehall star Stonebwoy.

“The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season is officially launching! Join us at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 12, 2025, at 5 PM. We’ll be joined by His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, with a live performance by the Torcher, Stonebwoy.  Get ready for an exciting season of Ghanaian football,” the GFA posted.

Beyond the curtain-raiser in Accra, the opening round of matches will continue over the weekend, with two fixtures lined up for Saturday and six more on Sunday, rounding off Week 1 of the campaign.

The new season is expected to bring fresh excitement to Ghanaian football as fans gear up for another round of drama, rivalries, and emerging talents in the country’s top-flight competition.
