Gideon Mensah credits Andre Ayew for motivation during nerve-wracking World Cup debut
Black Stars player, Gideon Mensah has revealed Andre Ayew was a source of motivation before his debut at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The left-back played his first game at the Mundial against South Korea was impressive on the day as Ghana beat South Korea 3-2. He replaced Baba Rahman who played in the first group game against Portugal.
Speaking to Flashscore, the AJ Auxerre man says he was nervous when he got to know he will be the starting game. However, captain for the side, Andre Ayew motivated him to give his best.
“I remember during the warm-up, the captain Andre Ayew came to me. It was like head to head; his head was right in front of my forehead. He said, ‘Listen, you’ve been waiting for this. This is the moment where you need to show everybody’s watching you. You can’t make mistakes—you can’t let them down.’”
“That was something that really helped me a lot, “After that speech, I forgot about everything else. Being on the field, I didn’t think about whoever was watching; I was just focused on the game.” He recalled.
Gideon Mensah assisted Mohammed Kudus in the game to give Ghana the maximum points. Mensah made his debut for the Black Stars in 2019.
