FC Samartex GM Edmund Ackah Defends Season Performance Amid Title Defense Disappointment

General Manager of FC Samartex, Edmund Ackah, has dismissed suggestions that the club’s 2024/25 campaign was a failure, despite their inability to defend the Ghana Premier League title they won just a season ago.

The Timber giants, who entered the season as reigning champions, concluded the campaign in seventh place with 51 points — a significant drop from their title-winning exploits. Bibiani GoldStars eventually clinched the crown with a superior points tally, leaving Samartex well outside the top-four.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Ackah insisted that context was crucial in evaluating Samartex’s season and warned against quick judgments.

“The one who placed second last season got 51 points. We had the same number of points this season, and we finished seventh. So, our season can’t be described as a failure,” he stated.

Ackah pointed to the increased competitiveness of the league and the team’s CAF Champions League participation as contributing factors to their domestic decline. Samartex, who represented Ghana on the continental stage for the first time, exited the CAF Champions League in the preliminary round — an experience Ackah believes affected their rhythm in the league.

“We had major injury issues in our preparation towards the Champions League. We missed a number of key players during the season, including Baba Amando and Mankuyeli,” he explained.

Despite falling short in their league title defense, Samartex’s leadership maintains that the club has made significant progress, especially with their continental exposure.

The club now turns its attention to rebuilding and preparing for the next season, with hopes of reclaiming their place among Ghana’s elite.
