Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has confirmed that Cabinet has given the green light to the long-awaited Sports Fund proposal, paving the way for a bill to be presented before Parliament.

The move is aimed at providing sustainable financial support to the nation’s “less-financed sports,” a sector that has often struggled for resources despite consistent talent and achievements.

Speaking after Ghana’s impressive performance at the recent Africa Weightlifting Championships, where the country secured multiple medals, Adams revealed that the initiative would ensure equitable funding across various disciplines beyond football.

“The Cabinet of Ghana has approved the Sports Fund proposal, and a bill is being prepared to be laid before Parliament,” he said, stressing that the development was timely given the momentum of Ghana’s athletes in international competitions.

He noted that the creation of the fund will help disciplines like weightlifting, boxing, athletics, badminton, and armwrestling, which have historically lacked adequate financial backing, to grow and achieve even greater success.

The approval marks a significant milestone in the Ministry’s broader agenda to diversify investment in sports, strengthen development pathways, and guarantee athletes the necessary infrastructure and support to thrive on the global stage.
