Ghanaian boxing icon and media personality, Bukom Banku, has come out strongly in defense of his management of the Bukom AstroTurf, following widespread criticism and accusations of vandalism and unauthorized control.

Addressing the issue in an interview with Asempa FM, the flamboyant figure clarified that his involvement is purely for the upkeep of the community facility.

“I’m maintaining the AstroTurf, not destroying it. If you don’t understand what I’m doing, please don’t speak. I can take you to court,” Bukom Banku stated firmly.

The controversy surrounding the AstroTurf, which was constructed under the government’s “One Constituency, One AstroTurf” initiative, escalated after viral videos showed signs of poor management and alleged misuse.

Some community members accused Bukom Banku of taking over the pitch without formal approval and charging fees to users.

In response, the boxing legend explained that his involvement was driven by a desire to prevent the facility from falling into disrepair. He added that his sons assist him with cleaning and maintenance, and any money collected is reinvested in the upkeep of the pitch.

“This is a community facility. Someone must take care of it. I’m from Bukom and no one can bully me. If you like, go and tell President Mahama, the Vice President or the MP,” he added.

The Bukom AstroTurf was officially re-commissioned in January 2025 by the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), yet questions linger regarding its official day-to-day administration.

The incident has sparked broader discussions about the sustainability and governance of public sports infrastructure in Ghana.

Despite the backlash, Bukom Banku remains resolute in his mission to protect the pitch for the benefit of the Bukom community and future generations.
