Ghana U-20 defender Aaron Essel has revealed that the Black Satellites are treating their upcoming quarter-final clash against host nation Egypt as a “final,” as the team intensifies preparations for a make-or-break fixture at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking at the official pre-match press conference at the New Suez Stadium, Essel emphasized the high stakes of the encounter and the unwavering mindset of the Ghanaian camp.

“For us, this is a final. The field will decide who wins, and we are determined to make sure it’s Ghana,” he said. “Preparations have gone very well. Everyone is focused and ready to deliver.”

Ghana, who finished second in Group C behind Senegal, will face Egypt on Sunday, with a place in the semi-finals and a coveted ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup on the line.

Essel stressed the importance of discipline and adherence to tactical instructions from head coach Desmond Ofei, especially when facing a formidable Egyptian side backed by a passionate home crowd.

“There’s no pressure on us,” the defender insisted. “We’ve prepared well and are approaching the game with a strong mentality.”

The Black Satellites, four-time champions of the U-20 AFCON, are eyeing a return to the summit of youth football on the continent. Their last title came in 2021, and a win over Egypt would move them one step closer to another continental triumph.

The quarter-final match will kick off at 7:00 PM local time on Sunday, April 21, 2025.
