Accra Lions came from behind to seal a vital 2-1 win over Basake Holy Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, significantly boosting their hopes of survival in the Ghana Premier League.

Second-half goals from Musa Hamzata and Lucky Nwafor overturned an early penalty converted by Prince Tweneboah, as the Lions made a triumphant return to their traditional home ground for the first time since September 2024.

The visitors made an explosive start to the game, taking the lead just four minutes in. Tweneboah won a penalty after being brought down by Richard Agyen and made no mistake from the spot, confidently slotting the ball down the middle.

The early goal jolted Accra Lions into action, with the home side ramping up pressure in search of an equaliser. Midway through the first half, Jacob Awoute appeared to be fouled in the box, but referee Nathan Anaful waved away the appeals.

After the break, coach Rainer Kraft made a tactical triple substitution, introducing midfielders Seidu Sadat and Lawrence Setordjie, alongside forward Bernard Kesse to inject more energy into the game.

The changes soon paid dividends. In the 70th minute, Hamzata pounced on a loose ball outside the box and fired home a stunning effort to draw Accra Lions level.

Just five minutes later, the hosts completed their comeback. A brilliant passage of play saw Fuzy Taylor whip in a cross from the right which was expertly headed home by Lucky Nwafor, sparking jubilant celebrations from the home crowd.

The win lifts Accra Lions further away from the relegation zone and gives them renewed hope as the season enters its final phase. Basake Holy Stars, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly to avoid slipping into the danger zone.
