Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has underlined the importance of creating clear-cut chances as Ghana prepares to face Algeria in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The highly anticipated encounter is set for Saturday at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, with kickoff scheduled for 16:00 GMT. A place in the last four of the tournament is at stake.

Ghana qualified for the knockout stage after picking up a win, a draw, and a defeat during the group phase. Algeria, on the other hand, remain unbeaten, having recorded one win and two draws without conceding a single goal.

Speaking to the press on Friday, Björkegren praised the Algerian side’s defensive organization and highlighted the need for his players to improve their approach in the attacking third.

“Algeria are a really well-organised team, especially in defense, and they have a good goalkeeper,” Björkegren noted.

“We’ve talked about the need to make it a little more difficult for her.

“We can’t just shoot from 45 meters and hope for the best. We need to create better chances and be clinical when those opportunities come; no need to look for fancy goals.

“It’s going to be a difficult game, but I believe in the players. I’m sure they’ll put in a good performance,” he added.

The Black Queens are aiming for a strong finish in the tournament and a chance to break their long-standing title drought. With Björkegren at the helm, Ghana will be hoping to outsmart a resilient Algerian side and secure a semifinal berth.
