The debate competition, organised by the Parliament of Ghana in collaboration with STAR Ghana Foundation, brought together universities from across the country to debate issues relating to governance, parliamentary practice and democratic participation.

At the end of the competition, UniMAC secured the first position, beating teams from several top universities including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana (UG).

The final rankings were announced as follows:

6th – University of Ghana (UG)

The UniMAC team was represented by Titus Owusu Darko and Precious Agrobesa Akos, who delivered an impressive performance during the debates to secure victory for the university.

The Commonwealth Day Debate forms part of initiatives aimed at exposing students to parliamentary procedures, legislative debate and democratic governance, while encouraging critical thinking and public policy discussions among young people.

Speaking after the competition, External Affairs Officer of the UniMAC SRC, Alex Kobina Stonne, described the victory as a proud moment for the university.

“This achievement demonstrates the intellectual capacity and leadership potential within UniMAC. It is encouraging to see our students competing with some of the country’s top universities and emerging victorious,” he said.

He added that such platforms help position students to engage meaningfully in national conversations on governance, policy and leadership.

The competition forms part of activities designed to strengthen youth participation in democratic governance across the Commonwealth.
