The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on Tuesday led a parliamentary delegation to Jubilee House to officially present the Democracy Cup trophy to President John Dramani Mahama.

The brief ceremony brought together notable personalities in Ghana’s sporting fraternity, including Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, National Sports Authority (NSA) Director Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, as well as officials of Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics.

This year’s edition of the Democracy Cup will be staged at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday, September 5, where city rivals Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics will go head-to-head in what promises to be an exciting encounter.

Introduced in 2024 as a parliamentary initiative, the Democracy Cup was designed to deepen civic awareness and strengthen national cohesion through football.

Now in its second year, the competition is gradually cementing its place as one of the highly anticipated events on Ghana’s football calendar, serving both as a celebration of the country’s democratic journey and as a platform to showcase football’s role in uniting people.

Looking ahead, the GFA has revealed that the champions of the 2025 Democracy Cup will earn a spot in a special three-team tournament in the United States in May 2026, giving added incentive to this year’s contest.
