Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schaefer has showered praise on Hearts of Oak captain and goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, describing him as the most impressive home-based player he has watched since taking up his role with the national team setup.

The experienced German tactician has made good on his promise to closely follow the Ghana Premier League, spending the past two months visiting various match venues and engaging with local coaches and players to assess talent within the domestic scene.

Schaefer was present over the weekend when Medeama SC progressed to the quarter-finals of the Ghana FA Cup after edging FC Samartex on penalties, using the opportunity to further underline his commitment to monitoring local talent.

In an exclusive interview with Medeamaa FM, the former Cameroon head coach, who led the Indomitable Lions to AFCON glory, stressed the importance of Ghana’s domestic league and singled out Asare for special recognition.

“Over the past two months, I have been visiting league venues, speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper,” Schaefer said.

He further emphasized that the Ghana Premier League remains a crucial pipeline for the national team, encouraging local players to stay focused and ambitious.

“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe. I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars,” he added.

Asare’s leadership and consistent performances for Hearts of Oak have earned widespread admiration, and Schaefer’s endorsement further cements his status as one of the standout figures in Ghana’s domestic football landscape.
